True, you can't get much for under a buck today, and, when you do, its usually a small bag of chips or an on-sale candy bar. Being a travel writer and a finance blogger, I always find the best deals and attractions right in my backyard, with local events. Well, that was what Frankfort residents did, as they enjoyed a real treat Wednesday evening, as they all lined up outside the popular Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Shop. A live band and several local cheerleaders, who double as Shop employees, entertained hot and hungry guests, as they all lined up in the 80-degree weather outside the Franklin Square Shop.
"I work hard all year, and this is how I give back to the community", said Shop owner and General Manager, Kenny Tran, "The 31 cents I get for all 5,000 dips we will serve this evening will go to the local fire department; they will be here later, with their bright red trucks."
Kenny has been helping the community for many years, as he has been owner of The Shop for many years, assisting the community with events like this, and through hiring locals who cheerfully dip up the variety of ice cream flavors The Shop is known for around the area. He paid for the live band and the ice cream and staff to man the 5-hour event out of his own pocket. "At the end of every April, this is what I look forward to-giving back to the community."
As I left, chocolate and strawberry cheesecake double in tow, the laughter and mingling of area residents, from toddlers to seniors echoed through The Square. "What a day to end a Thursday evening before The Derby", I thought as I passed the long line and circles of extended families leisurely relaxing outside The Shop.
